The central Mediterranean Sea is one of the deadliest borders in the world—yet thousands of people attempt the crossing every year. In 2024 alone, 1,810 people were reported missing or dead. These are the official numbers; the unreported cases are believed to be significantly higher.

This installation consists of a mobile structure with a diameter of 350 cm, featuring 12 stoneware figures and a video projection. The video shows the absurd duality between German politics and real events unfolding in the central Mediterranean.

The video is based on a two-month-long search and rescue (SAR) mission carried out in 2024/2025.

The central Mediterranean Sea is a place of contrasts.
The civil rescue fleet and the Italian coastguard race against the odds to save lives, while Libyan militias intercept and return people to suffering and human trafficking.

Between Europe and Africa, Italian laws override international maritime law. Human rights no longer apply to all — they have become privileges.

Every day, when the sea is calm enough, people — family members — risk the dangerous journey across the central Mediterranean, carrying hope for a better future.

Search and rescue (SAR)

2024-2025

Between November and January 2024/2025, the Italian NGO ResQ People conducted three search and rescue missions in the central Mediterranean Sea with their ship.
During the missions, four boats carrying a total of 143 people, were spotted in distress. After successful rescues the survivors were safely brought ashore in Italy. The youngest human seeking refuge in Europe was an unaccompanied 13-year-old child.

Protests against Tesla

2024

On May 10 and 11, 2024, between 800 and 1,200 activists protested against the expansion of the Tesla Gigafactory in Gruenheide, Germany.

Tesla plans to expand the factory by 300 hectares. Unfortunately, two-thirds of the newly acquired land lies within a designated drinking water protection area in the forest. In an initial phase back in 2020, 90 hectares of forest were already cleared. Tesla’s continued intervention in nature poses a threat to the local groundwater.

In an effort to slow down the expansion, the forest was occupied on February 28, 2024, by the group „Tesla den Hahn abdrehen“ (roughly: „Turn off Tesla’s tap“). However, police forces cleared the occupation on November 18, 2024.

Despite a citizens’ referendum in February 2024, in which 62.5% voted against the factory’s expansion, construction appears to be moving forward.
